InFocus has worked with Exeter Cathedral to create new Braille Visitor Guides, helping people with vision impairment to explore one of Devon’s most iconic landmarks.

The project began following work experience visits to Exeter Cathedral by students from InFocus College. The visits led to the Cathedral commissioning InFocus to produce accessible versions of its existing Visitor Guide.

Our Braille and Tactile Resources Technician, Rosie Barron, transcribed the guide into both uncontracted (Grade 1) and contracted (Grade 2) Braille. The guides also include a tactile floor plan of the Cathedral.

The new guides were officially launched on 24 July, when representatives from InFocus and Exeter Cathedral came together to mark the occasion.

Nic Smith, InFocus’ Deputy Principal and Head of Vision Impairment, spoke about the importance of accessible communication such as Braille and audio description in helping people feel welcome and included.

Laurence Blyth, InFocus’ Director of Income Generation and Business Development, said:

“We’re delighted to have partnered with Exeter Cathedral on this important project. As a local charity with more than 180 years of experience supporting people with vision impairments, it’s wonderful to share our expertise in a way that helps make such an iconic local landmark more accessible.”

The project demonstrates how InFocus’ specialist knowledge can be used to improve accessibility beyond our own services, while also highlighting the opportunities our College students have to gain meaningful work experience in their local community.

The Braille Visitor Guides are now available from Exeter Cathedral’s Welcome Desk.
