Helping young people with vision impairment and complex needs succeed in the workplace

Employability training

Employability training builds on many of the skills and experiences from work experience as part of a structured work-related working package.

Training is delivered by a number of staff, including people living with vision impairment.

We concentrate on developing the skills and confidence to needed to help someone go out into the world of work.

What is employability training?

Employability training is a type of learning designed to help individuals gain the skills they need to succeed in the workplace. It builds upon experience gained through work experience and other forms of vocational education, providing participants with an understanding of how the workplace works and providing them with the confidence and skills needed to be successful in their chosen career.

What skills do we focus on?

We focus on a range of skills during our employability training, including job search techniques, job application writing, interview skills, communication and teamwork.

We also offer sessions on computer literacy and assistive technology for those living with vision impairment, as well as providing advice on workplace health and safety. Through these activities we aim to provide participants with the knowledge and confidence they need in order to succeed.

Skills can include:

Planning and problem-solving

Planning and problem-solving are important skills for success in the workplace. Employability training helps participants develop these skills through tasks and exercises that require them to think things through, analyse problems and come up with solutions.

Communication

Building effective communication skills is essential for any job role or workplace. Participants learn how to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers by practising active listening, speaking clearly and using the appropriate language.

Following instructions

We will give our trainees practice situations where they can learn the importance of following instructions. This could include taking part in activities such as keeping a diary, filling out forms, and completing tasks on time.

Task management

This can include learning how to identify specific tasks, prioritising tasks, working efficiently, and understanding any safety protocols that may be in place.

Time management

We promote the importance of being organised and staying on task in order to complete assignments on time. During our training sessions we will focus on ways to stay focused and make the most of available time.

Volunteering in charity shops

Our employability training can include volunteering in charity shops which can help students gain experience in the workplace. This will provide them with the opportunity to practice their skills, learn how to work as part of a team, and develop communication and customer service skills.

Benefits of employability training?

Employability training can help students develop communication skills, problem-solving skills, decision-making skills and teamwork abilities.

Training offers a range of benefits to participants. It can help to improve their self-esteem and confidence in the workplace, as well as building their knowledge of the local job market. With improved communication skills, students are better placed to make an informed decision on the type of job they would like and how to pursue it.

It also helps participants develop important skills in areas such as job searching and interviewing, preparing a CV and cover letter, time management, personal branding, and online presence. It can also help them to understand the importance of networking and how it can help them find employment.

“I wasn’t confident to get a job. I wasn’t confident to put myself out there. I can now go out and go where I want. I can plan a bus journey by myself. It’s brilliant. I don’t need to worry about whether I can do something or not.”

Jeff, former InFocus student.
