Different work experience placements help to develop skills and experiences including:
- preparing for work
- travelling to work
- working with other people in a team
- practicing communication skills
- considering others’ points of view
- learning how and where they can make their contribution in a commercial environment.
Types of work experience placements
At our college, we understand the importance of work experience and vocational opportunities for students. We believe that it is essential to include such experiences in each student’s learning pathway, as they can help to broaden their skills and develop greater confidence in their abilities.
To ensure successful outcomes, we closely liaise with each student to identify the best work or vocational opportunities that align with their abilities and interests.
Examples of the types of work experience placements available to InFocus College students include:
- Retail experience in one of our five charity shops
- Online trading at our eBay store
- Catering and customer service at the InFocus cafe
- Gardening and horticulture at one of our two outdoor sites
Supported internships
Students also have the option to explore opportunities beyond the campus and work with local businesses. We have established strong partnerships with various types of work to ensure that our students find the best fit for their interests and skills.
Additionally, we offer supported internships that typically last for a year, where young people are mentored and coached by a job coach in specific placements. This program serves as a bridge between work experience and an apprenticeship or paid employment, providing our students with valuable stepping stones towards their career goals.
Work experience as part of preparation for adulthood
We build work experience into each student’s weekly College timetable. This ensures that they exceed the recommended ten days of work experience per academic year. There is also a continuity of attendance, consistency of purpose and reinforcement of skills.
InFocus has excellent links with a number of partners. This gives our students a wide choice of organisations to choose from. We have previously worked with businesses including:

Benefits of Work Experience for Students
Work experience is an invaluable tool for students, as it helps to bridge the gap between education and employment. For many young people, gaining work experience allows them to explore different career paths and develop the necessary skills and knowledge needed in the workplace.
For students with complex needs, work experience provides a safe environment in which they can learn and practise new skills. It can also help to build confidence and independence, as well as develop their social skills.
During their placements, they are provided with guidance and feedback to help them progress. This includes topics such as understanding expectations and meeting deadlines, problem solving, communication and self-management.
Through this process, our students learn how to take ownership of their own learning journey, helping them to develop a greater sense of self-worth.
