Many of the young people at InFocus need additional support, therapeutic intervention and other services.
This may be part of helping them to fully access learning opportunities in the College, or across all our services to promote independence, develop functional skills and maintain physical and emotional well-being.
This support is delivered by our in-house Health and Therapy team and Vision Impairment Support Team as a fully integrated programme. Some of the support is alongside education and care, and some is delivered as stand-alone sessions.
Staff based at our main site in Exeter (and employed by the charity) get to spend more time with the young people which builds stronger relationships and improves the quality of support. They are also able to work as part of a wider, multidisciplinary team of professionals.
Helping young people build independence
We provide a wide range of specialist support services that help our young people achieve their potential in life. Our vision is to make sure every young person with sight loss and disability gets access to the same opportunities as others.
We aim to make sure they have the opportunity to learn, grow and develop into independent adults who can live and work independently. Our services encourage independence whilst providing the necessary support and care required.
After being here for a few more years I’m hoping to become independent enough to move out and get a job. I always told myself that because I’m disabled I won’t be able to do anything that more abled people can do, but being at InFocus college has proved me wrong. It feels amazing knowing that I can do everything more abled people can do.

Educational support
The InFocus College for Vision impairment also provides personalised learning programmes, specialist resources and a wide range of educational support. Our specialist curriculum ensures that young people are able to access learning opportunities in a range of areas, including functional skills and independent living.
We can also support students with getting qualifications such as GCSEs in English, Maths and ICT.
Employment Support
We provide specialist advice and support to help young people find employment opportunities, as well as developing the skills required for success in the workplace. We work with employers to ensure that our young people can access appropriate training and employment opportunities.
Independent Living
At InFocus, we provide a range of services to help young people with vision impairment and other complex needs gain the skills they need to live independently. Through our independent living, we can provide advice and guidance on a range of topics, such as budgeting, cooking, personal care and more.
We also encourage independent decision-making and problem-solving, as well as developing techniques for managing emotions and stress.
