Enriching lives at Riding for the Disabled Association

A young women being supported onto a horse

InFocus Charity have been working with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) for the last 13 years. The young people who benefit from RDA are all visually impaired and have further complex needs. This combination often means that these young people find it harder to access mainstream sporting and recreation activities, or may need substantial support to do so.

InFocus takes a number of young people to weekly RDA sessions. The sessions are run by incredible volunteers at a local stable who support our young people to experience riding and challenge them to complete tasks and challenges during a 45 minute session.

“RDA is a fantastic opportunity for our young people to participate in to support their physiotherapy needs. It brings enormous long-term benefits to our young people in a number of areas of their lives.”

Nicky Groucutt, Specialist Therapy Assistant at Infocus

InFocus have observed a marked improvement in the young people that attend RDA, in both physiotherapeutic progress as well as in their confidence and social interaction. The young people who are able to verbalise have said that they can feel the benefits such as improved walking gait, improved posture, improved mid-line bilateral hand function and greater sensory awareness. Thanks to the fantastic volunteers at RDA for building such a positive relationship for our young people in the stables.
