Specialist physiotherapy services

Physiotherapists specialise in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disorders that affect movement and muscle function. They work with patients to help them find ways to manage their conditions and improve their quality of life.

Based in Exeter, we provide specialist physiotherapy services for young people with complex needs and vision impairment. Learn more about the types of care we can provide for your children & young adults.

Physiotherapy services

At InFocus, we aim to identify the physical challenges faced by our young people. Such challenges may be due to physical or learning disabilities, including visual impairments. We are committed to developing these physical skills to enable our students to participate in everyday activities as independently as possible.

This includes assisting them to access our specialist curriculum, promoting functional independence, and maintaining, developing and restoring motor function. Our goal is to help students maintain their physical function for as long as possible by improving their movement.

Our physiotherapy services aim to improve:

  • 3D spatial awareness
  • Mobility
  • Balance
  • Stability
  • Orientation
  • Muscle strengthening
  • Postural correction

Our physiotherapists work with our young people, families, health professionals, and communities to make sure our methods are consistent. We aim to provide knowledge and skills to maximising and managing physical ability, therefore improving your children’s quality of life.

Physiotherapy can also play a vital role in helping children recover from severe injuries. InFocus provides tailored treatment programs that are designed to meet your child’s needs.

Other support therapies

The InFocus College also provides support for young people with complex needs with a wide range of therapies, including:

  • Occupational therapy – promotes independence for everyday activities, as well as for around the home.
  • Mobility training – provides training for skills and strategies to develop safe, confident travellers.
  • Speech and language therapy – helping students to develop their communications skills, allowing them to communicate effectively.

We use this holistic approach to ensure each student receives the best care available. This is especially important, as it ensures that all aspects of their health are addressed.

Physiotherapy facilities

As well as our support services, we can also provide access to a wide range of specialist facilities, such as:

  • Hydrotherapy pool – includes a hoist chair to allow wheelchair users to easily enter/exit the water. The changing rooms are also wheelchair accessible. This allows students to gain confidence in the water.
  • Swimming pool – Our 25 metre swimming pool is wheelchair accessible (via a hoist system). It features a tactile wall mural with a range of accessible changing facilities and inflatables. Swimming allows students to maintain muscle tone and strength, while increasing coordination and balance.
  • Trampolines – We currently have two trampolines, which are used regularly for rebound therapy.  Rebound therapy is an effective way of increasing strength, balance and coordination. One of the trampolines includes a hoist system, allowing more children to use the trampoline.
  • Mechanical horse – With our horse riding stimulator, we provide great therapy for balance, muscle strength and toning, as the horse motion imitates the walking gait. This helps improve posture, core stability and confidence.

In addition to supporting students, we also work closely with schools and colleges across Exeter and Devon. If you would like further information about how we can help your child, please contact us today!
