Former pupil, Glenda Benger MBE, completes her amazing 2,280 mile – Route 66 themed – challenge by walking the final steps at the InFocus campus after raising £1300 for the charity. 

Starting on 2nd January 2022, Glenda has virtually walked and cycled America’s historic Route 66 – from Chicago to Los Angeles – as a personal challenge to herself and to raise money for InFocus – a charity close to her heart.

Joined by family, staff and pupils – both past and present – Glenda walked the last 300 metres at InFocus on 20th October after committing much of the year to completing the course.   

Speaking at the finishing line, Glenda commented: “I decided to take on the challenge to celebrate my 60th year and also give back to the charity that was my former school which supported myself and many others with visual impairment. Although InFocus has now extended its support to young people with complex needs, its expertise in visual impairment remains and is invaluable to those with sight loss. I’m happy to know the money raised will go directly towards making a difference to the students and young adults at InFocus”.

Laurence Blyth, Director of Income Generation and Business Development, said: We’re delighted that Glenda has successfully completed her challenge and in doing so has raised money that will go towards our charity’s work with people who have vision impairment and complex needs. This will include providing equipment like talking microwaves to help prepare our young people to live as independent young adults out in the community. We’re extremely grateful for Glenda’s loyalty to InFocus and for choosing to support us in her charity challenge”.
