In a follow-up to last year’s transformative trip to Gran Canaria, six adventurous InFocus College students embarked on another unforgettable three-week journey to the sunny Canary Island. Accompanied by seven dedicated staff members, the group stayed in a large house on a banana plantation, immersing themselves in the local culture.
For these students, all of whom have vision impairments and complex needs, the trip represented a significant emotional and physical challenge. Leaving behind their secure routines and familiar environments required immense courage and trust, both from the students and the experienced, skilled staff who supported them.
Preparation for the trip included learning Spanish as part of the College’s Culture Club. These lessons paid off as the students used their language skills to engage more fully with their Spanish experience.
The trip was also an extension of the life skills taught at the College. Students had real-life opportunities to plan meals, shop for groceries, cook, maintain their living space, wash and dry clothes, and manage money. Living together for three weeks allowed them to form strong bonds and learn the importance of teamwork and mutual support.
Throughout the trip, staff observed the growing camaraderie and encouragement among the students. They participated in a variety of enriching activities that pushed them out of their comfort zones. These included shopping, bowling, tasting new foods, exploring historical sites, enjoying local music, kayaking, visiting a coffee plantation, karaoke, visiting a theme park, exploring the island, swimming in the sea, wine tasting at a vineyard, a cheese-making workshop, and a thrilling catamaran trip!
Team Leader Matt Clarke remarked, “The students amazed us every day with their willingness to try new experiences and overcome challenges. They stepped out of their comfort zones, doing things they never thought possible—all with smiles on their faces. It was incredible!”
This life-changing trip was made possible through a collaboration with Eat That Frog, an innovative further education organisation that operates a specialist college across Devon and Cornwall. With funding from the Turing Scheme, Eat That Frog recognised the potential to provide transformative experiences for students, including opportunities to study or work abroad at a residential facility in Gran Canaria. This unique programme offered a wide range of activities and learning opportunities, helping students develop their confidence, resilience, and independent living skills.
The Gran Canaria trip has once again proven to be a profound and impactful experience, enriching the lives of InFocus College students and broadening their horizons in ways they never imagined.
