New accessible bathroom for students

A bathroom with accessible bath and a wet-room shower. There’s trolley next to the bath and a ceiling hoist.

Thanks to a long-term supporter, we are thrilled to install an accessible bathroom in one of our residential homes at InFocus.

Our Home from Home Appeal

Nothing has a bigger impact on a person than the spaces they call home. Our Home from Home appeal aims to fully refurbish one of our residential homes here. A donation of £27,000 has meant that we have been able to progress with our appeal and install a fully accessible bath and tracking hoist in the main bathroom. This has dramatically enlarged the space and has made it more accessible for wheelchair users.

Progress

The difference this new accessible bathroom has had is phenomenal. Mobility aids and specialist baths create a safer and more enjoyable bathing experience for both the young people using the facilities and the enablers that provide support and assistance. With the new tracking hoist and accessible bath, some of our young people who were not previously able to access or relax in the bath here are now able to.

Emma Lyall, Head of Care at InFocus said:

“The young people are absolutely thrilled with their new accessible bathroom. They have said it’s like staying in a hotel and are all lining up to have a bath each evening. The enablers working with them have also said it’s so much easier to work with and the difference it has made to the young people’s independence is fantastic.”

What’s next?

Many of our young people reside at InFocus full-time or during term-time. We are passionate about providing a supportive and fun environment in which young people with specialist needs and visual impairments can thrive both in and out the classroom. The installation of this new bathroom is great progress but it is still just a start.
